Enugu state Government has inaugurated a 3-man Advisory Panel of Inquiry to investigate the crisis in Obeagu Ugwuaji Autonomous Community in Enugu South Local Government Area of the state.
This followed the suspension of the community’s traditional ruler, His Royal Highness Igwe Christopher Nyia, over his alleged involvement in the crisis in the community.
Inaugurating the Panel on Thursday,July 30 ,2026, the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr. Charles Egumgbe, said the panel was approved by the state Governor, Dr Peter Mbah to conduct an independent and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the lingering dispute.
The chairman of the committee is the immediate past Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Enugu Branch, Venatus Odo, Secretary , Mrs Helen Onyia and Prof. Christian Obeagu( member).
Speaking during the inauguration, Egumgbe said the committee had been mandated to establish both the immediate and underlying causes of the conflict, assess the role played by the suspended monarch and any other persons connected with the breakdown of law and order, identify individuals or groups involved, and recommend practical measures capable of restoring enduring peace.
He added that the assignment was not intended to persecute anyone but to provide the government with objective recommendations based on facts.
His words,” the government is not interested in witch-hunting anybody. What is important is that the panel conducts its assignment with fairness, transparency and in line with the principles of fair hearing”.
The Commissioner charged members of the committee to carry out their assignment with integrity. He warned that the state government will not tolerate any attempt by individuals or groups to interfere with or influence the investigation.
The Commissioner assured the panel of the ministry’s full cooperation and logistical support throughout the exercise.
He directed the committee to conclude its investigation and submit the report to the state government within two weeks from the date of inauguration.
Responding on behalf of othe members of the panel, the Chairman , Venatus Odo expressed appreciation to Enugu State Government for the confidence reposed in the members, pledging to discharge their duties professionally and objectively.
“We appreciate the privilege to serve the state in this capacity. By the grace of God, we will carry out this responsibility professionally and get to the root of the issues to enthrone peace in the community,” he said.
