Nearly six months after 176 residents of Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State were abducted by terrorists, families of the victims have appealed for urgent government intervention, revealing that kidnappers rejected more than N155 million raised by the affected communities for their release.
The relatives said the failed negotiations had deepened fears for the safety of the captives after the gunmen allegedly threatened to execute some of the victims and force some of the women into marriage.
Speaking in an emotional video obtained on Thursday, a community representative, Abdul Ibrahim, said residents exhausted every available means to secure the victims’ freedom, including selling valuables, making mass contributions, staging protests and negotiating directly with the abductors.
According to him, despite raising over N155 million, the kidnappers allegedly refused to accept the money, leaving families devastated and uncertain about the fate of their loved ones.
“We contributed more than N155 million because we believed it would bring our people home. Instead, the money was rejected and the suffering has continued,” Ibrahim said.
He appealed to the Federal Government, the Kwara State Government and security agencies to launch a decisive rescue operation, insisting that only government intervention could end the prolonged captivity.
Also speaking, the Dan Sardaukin Kaiama, Suleiman Bukata, urged security agencies to replicate the successful rescue operation recently carried out in neighbouring Oyo State to free the Kwara victims.
“No Nigerian community should be left to face this kind of tragedy alone. If people could be rescued elsewhere, our people should not be forgotten,” Bukata said.
The victims were abducted on February 3 when heavily armed assailants attacked Woro and neighbouring Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area, killing several residents before taking away scores of others.
The families said they remain hopeful that intensified security operations would secure the release of the 176 abductees, who have now spent almost six months in captivity.
