Three die in Warri–Itakpe train derail

Three passengers have been confirmed dead following the derailment of a train on the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS) corridor at Agbor in Delta State.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirmed the incident on Monday, stating that emergency response teams and relevant authorities were immediately deployed to the scene to assist affected passengers and assess the situation.
In a statement, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NRC, Kayode Opeifa, said the corporation was closely monitoring developments.

According to him, emergency responders were attending to the situation and providing necessary assistance to passengers involved in the accident. He added that a detailed statement would be released as investigations and rescue efforts continued.
As of the time of reporting, the cause of the derailment had not been officially disclosed.

The Presidency, through a statement on its X handle, later confirmed that three passengers lost their lives in the accident. It noted that rescue and emergency operations were activated immediately and that all passengers on board had been accounted for.

The statement expressed condolences to the victims and their families, while urging members of the public to rely only on verified information and official updates from the NRC as investigations continue.

The incident occurred barely a month after the NRC temporarily suspended operations on the Warri–Itakpe rail corridor, citing operational exigencies and technical recommendations from its engineers. The corporation had explained that the suspension was necessary to conduct critical assessments aimed at ensuring safety, reliability, and improved service delivery along the route.
