WHO, UNICEF, others laud Gov Mbah’s investment on Primary Healthcare …As Enugu records 80% rise in PHC visits, 88.9% on immunization coverage

Enugu State Governor, Dr Peter Mbah has been commended for his administration’s investment in primary healthcare across the state, just as the state has recorded 80% rise in Primary HealthCare visits and 88.9% on immunization coverage .

, Community leaders and other stakeholders, gave the commendation on Tuesday, during the 2026 Biannual Meeting and Supportive Supervisory Visit by the governor to the Type 2 Primary Healthcare Centre in Ihe Ward, Nsukka Local Government Area of the state

Speaking at the event, the South East Zonal Coordinator of WHO Nigeria, Dr. Chukwumuanya Igbonekwu, described Governor Mbah’s regular supervisory visits to healthcare facilities as a strong driver of accountability, motivation, and improved service delivery.
He praised the Enugu State Government for prioritising investments in the health sector and pledged WHO’s continued support in strengthening the state’s healthcare system.
Also speaking, the Chief of UNICEF Field Office in Enugu, Juliet Chiluwe, represented by Health Logistics Consultant, Dr. Charles Abel, commended the governor for his commitment to improving primary healthcare services across the state.
She said the governor’s routine oversight visits demonstrated leadership that prioritises the health and wellbeing of residents, particularly women and children, while reaffirming UNICEF’s support for the administration.

Speaking at the event, Enugu state Governor Dr Peter Mbah, who also met separately with traditional rulers and women leaders from Nsukka Local Government Area, said his administration deliberately built 260 primary healthcare centres across the state’s 260 political wards to ensure equitable access to quality healthcare.
He expressed satisfaction that the investment had contributed to a significant reduction in maternal mortality, stressing that the administration was working towards eliminating maternal deaths in the state.
The governor urged traditional rulers, women leaders and other community stakeholders to intensify awareness campaigns on immunisation, antenatal and postnatal care, encourage residents to enrol in the state’s universal healthcare scheme, and monitor service delivery at healthcare centres while reporting any observed shortcomings.


He also assured residents that the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS) Teaching Hospital would soon be equipped with MRI, CT scan and other radiological facilities to reduce the need for patients to travel to Enugu metropolis for specialised medical services.


Speaking, the Executive Secretary of the Enugu State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (ENSPHDA), Dr. Ifeyinwa Ani-Osheku, disclosed that visits to primary healthcare centres had increased from 800,000 to 1.4 million, representing an 80 per cent rise.
She also revealed that Penta-3 immunisation coverage increased from 78.5 per cent to 88.9 per cent, surpassing the national target of 85 per cent.

Giving an overview of the administration’s achievements in the health sector, Dr. Ani-Osheku said 260 new health centres had been constructed across all wards in the state.
She added that the government had provided 3,380 hospital beds and 520 baby cots, recruited 2,250 health workers, and deployed doctors to primary healthcare facilities.
According to her, the proportion of women delivering safely in healthcare facilities increased from 40.9 per cent to 59.3 per cent within six months, while malaria treatment coverage nearly tripled.
She further stated that healthcare facilities had been digitised, patient waiting time reduced by almost 70 per cent, the availability of essential medicines significantly improved, and ultrasound services introduced at ward-level health centres.


Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area, Jude Asogwa,commended Governor Mbah ‘s massive development in the health sector. He said the Governor did 21 Primary Health Care Centres in Nsukka Local Government Area.

The Chairman expressed confidence that Governor Mbah ‘s performances would earn him a widespread electoral support in the 2027 general elections, assuring 100 percent votes for Governor Mbah and President Bola Tinubu.

Other speakers were the Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Enugu State chapter, Dr. Sunday Okafor, and the Commissioner for Health, Prof. George Ugwu, They lauded Governor Mbah’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery across the state.
