Former Leader of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Ikechukwu Ezeugwu, has condemned the conduct of recent political party primaries in the country, describing the process as “despicable” and dangerous to Nigeria’s democratic future.
SA former Leader of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Dr. Ikechukwu Ezeugwu, has decried what he described as the growing culture of dishonesty, violence and desperation in Nigeria’s political space, warning that the trend poses a serious threat to democracy and the nation’s younger generation.
Ezeugwu, who is contesting for the House of Representatives seat under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), expressed concern over the conduct of some political party primaries, saying the level of impunity displayed by political actors had become alarming.
He made that known in a statement made available to Newsmen on Monday in Enugu. The former lawmaker said Nigerians, civil society organisations and the international community were closely observing developments in the country’s political arena, stressing that political actors must begin to uphold integrity and accountability.
According to him, the increasing prevalence of deceit, vote-buying mentality, hooliganism and cult-related activities during party primaries had reduced the sanctity of politics and governance.
“How and when did we descend this low? No shame, no fear of what the judgment will be. What are we teaching our children and generations yet unborn?” he queried.
Ezeugwu recalled that before venturing into partisan politics in 2011, members of his family warned him against bringing the family name into disrepute through questionable conduct. He said he had since resolved never to live a double life or compromise his values for political gain.
“I was raised with strong family values and I made a promise to quit politics the day it demands that I become a different person outside my conscience,” he stated.
The NDC aspirant also called on civil society organisations and well-meaning Nigerians to rise against actions capable of destroying the nation’s democratic foundations and corrupting the youth.
“If we cannot change the polity positively, then let us leave it the way we met it,” he said.
Ezeugwu said his decision to seek elective office was driven by a desire to change the narrative and restore dignity, justice and truth to public service.
He urged politicians across party lines to embrace peace, fairness and love for one another in order to rebuild public confidence in the political process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
