Lagos State Government has arrested a man accused of locking his 28-year-old daughter-in-law, Tosin, out of her matrimonial home eight days after the death of her husband, following allegations of threats, intimidation and an attempt to dispossess the widow and her two children of their late father’s property.
The arrest was confirmed on Tuesday by the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency after the case sparked widespread outrage on social media.
The agency said it established contact with the widow, who alleged that she had been subjected to threats to her life, physical assault and intimidation since her husband’s death on July 20.
According to the agency, the matter had already been reported at the Owutu Police Division, adding that the alleged perpetrator was arrested and remains in police custody while investigations continue.
The case gained public attention after activist Harrison Gwamnishu shared a video showing the woman’s father-in-law padlocking the gate of the family house, allegedly preventing her from accessing her home.
Gwamnishu alleged that shortly after the man’s death, his parents and other relatives moved into the residence in Ikorodu and ordered the widow to confine her belongings and those of her two young sons to a single room.
He also claimed that some of the deceased’s personal belongings had already been shared among family members, while plans were being made to sell his vehicle.
Describing the widow’s ordeal, the activist said she now lives in fear and appealed to the Lagos State Government to protect her and her children from unlawful dispossession and ensure they retain their rightful inheritance.
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency assured the public that the government remains committed to safeguarding the widow and her children and will continue working with the police and other relevant stakeholders to ensure justice is served.
The agency also urged residents to report cases of domestic and sexual violence through its official reporting channels.
