A Nigerian medical doctor, Dr. Ere Ogbachi, has died from complications shortly after giving birth to triplets in Bayelsa .State.
Family members confirmed that Ogbachi delivered the babies at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital before her condition deteriorated, necessitating an emergency transfer to the Intensive Care Unit at the Federal Medical Centre Yenagoa.
According to a statement released by her brother, Meshack Sintei, the doctor died in the early hours of April 14 despite efforts by medical personnel to stabilise her.
“She successfully gave birth, but complications set in shortly after. We watched as doctors fought to save her life, but her condition worsened rapidly,” the statement said.
Medical details shared by the family indicated a sharp drop in oxygen saturation levels during treatment, underscoring the severity of the complications.
Ogbachi, described as a dedicated physician and young mother, was a registrar at the teaching hospital and a member of the Nigerian Medical Association.
Her death has reignited conversations around maternal health risks, even among healthcare professionals, in Nigeria’s overstretched health system.
