Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned the alleged obstruction of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during his visit to Benue State to commiserate with victims of the Yelwata massacre.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the party alleged that Obi’s convoy was blocked by suspected thugs, preventing him from accessing Yelwata community, where more than 270 people were reportedly killed.
The NDC alleged that the group was led by an aide to the Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, and was armed with dangerous weapons.
According to the party, Obi arrived in Benue at about 9 a.m. with the intention of visiting victims and families affected by the killings but was stopped by youths chanting, “Peter Obi, go back.”
The NDC described the incident as “deeply troubling and condemnable,” stressing that Obi’s visit was intended to mourn with grieving families, offer solidarity and listen to victims on measures to prevent future tragedies..
