Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally recognised the faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) supported by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The electoral body updated its official records on Monday, listing new members of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC), including Abdulrahman Mohammed as National Chairman and Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary.
The recognition followed the PDP National Convention held in Abuja on Sunday, where the new leadership emerged through a consensus arrangement after the dissolution of the party’s caretaker committee.
INEC’s decision is seen as a major boost for Wike, the immediate past governor ofllRivers state, whose influence within the PDP has remained strong despite internal opposition.
Wike’s loyalists in Rivers and neighbouring states are expected to consolidate around the newly recognised leadership, a move that could reshape political alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Deepening PDP divisions
The development is also likely to deepen existing cracks within the PDP, as rival factions contest legitimacy and control of the party structure.
Party insiders say the emergence of the Wike-backed leadership may trigger fresh legal and political battles, especially from camps opposed to his growing dominance in the party.
Analysts warn that unless reconciliatory efforts are made, the PDP could face prolonged internal instability, potentially weakening its position as Nigeria’s main opposition party.
