Chairman of the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, His Royal Majesty Igwe Samuel Asadu, has narrated how he rose from being homeless after arriving in the United States to becoming a traditional ruler and one of Nigeria’s leading monarchs, saying his life’s mission is to use the throne to serve humanity through healthcare, education, infrastructure and social welfare
In this interview, the monarch spoke about his humble beginnings, his years abroad, his return to Nigeria, and the community development projects that have defined his reign.Excerpt:
Question: Tell us about yourself and your career before ascending the throne.
Igwe Asadu: My name is His Royal Majesty Igwe Samuel Asadu, Ogadagidi 1 of Edem-Ani Ogwugwu Ancient Kingdom. I am the Chairman of the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, immediate past Chairman of the South-East Traditional Rulers Council and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Council of Traditional Rulers of Africa.
I ascended the throne on August 10, 2022. I later became Chairman of the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council on March 29, 2024, Chairman of the South-East Traditional Rulers Council on June 6, 2024, and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Council of Traditional Rulers of Africa on September 28, 2024.
“I’ve been learning on the job, promoting our culture and adding value to traditional institutions.”
Question: What was your upbringing like?
Igwe Asadu: I was born in a small village in Edem-Ani, Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State. I attended primary school there before proceeding to Enugu Boys High School, where I was the best graduating student.
I was raised by humble Christian parents who taught me discipline and the importance of loving my neighbour.
“Everything I did in life, I always aimed to be number one. My parents gave me Christian values that have guided my life.”
Question: How did you eventually relocate abroad?
Igwe Asadu: I initially wanted to become a medical doctor, but I ended up studying nursing. After working for some state governments, I decided to seek better opportunities overseas because I couldn’t see a future for myself.
When I arrived in New York, I knew nobody.
“I landed in America without knowing anybody. I was homeless in New York before moving from one city to another until I finally settled in Dallas, Texas.”

Question: What happened after you settled in America?
Igwe Asadu: I eventually met my wife in Dallas. We got married and were blessed with four children. I stayed in America for about 10 years without returning to Nigeria.
Looking back, I believe God was preparing me for leadership.
“After spending 10 years abroad, I returned home and still became king of my community. That is the work of God.”
Question: Did you always know you would become a traditional ruler?
Igwe Asadu: No. My parents were not kings or queens, so I never imagined I would become one.
“I didn’t know God made me a king. I was born a king without knowing it.”
Question: What philosophy guides your reign?
Igwe Asadu: My mission is to promote peace, love and service to humanity.
“The kingdom started with me. I am here to bring peace, love and tangible development. Love your neighbour as yourself.”
Question: How did your life abroad influence your commitment to community service?
Igwe Asadu: After returning to Nigeria with my family, I became emotional when I saw the needs around me. I decided to dedicate my resources to helping the less privileged.
“I started helping people. I started feeding people. I started building houses and creating a food bank because that is what God prepared me to do.”
Question: What major projects have you undertaken since becoming king?
Igwe Asadu: I established a 20-bed community hospital managed by a Board of Trustees led by Professor Felix Asokwa. The hospital employs two doctors and 17 staff and provides affordable healthcare.
We have modern equipment including X-ray, ultrasound, ECG machines, an ambulance and other medical facilities.
“Everything in the hospital is free except the drugs. We only recover the cost of replacing the medicines.”
Question: What other interventions have you carried out?
Igwe Asadu: I have built houses for widows and vulnerable people, with another one due for commissioning soon.
I also pay a monthly stipend of ₦50,000 to every blind person in my community, support hundreds of persons living with disabilities every December 3, sponsor brilliant students overseas, support kidney transplant patients, construct roads, install streetlights and renovate public facilities.
“If you are blind in my community, I will support you. Service to humanity is my calling.”
Question: Tell us about your food bank initiative.
Igwe Asadu: The idea came from my late father, who loved farming and maintained a large yam barn. After he passed away, I invested about ₦50 million in purchasing yams and transformed his barn into a community food bank.
“When my father died, I converted his yam barn into a food bank. Today, it has become a monument of hope for our people.”
Question: Looking back, what does your journey mean to you?
Igwe Asadu: My life has taught me that no condition is permanent. From being homeless in America to becoming a traditional ruler, everything has been by God’s grace.
“God prepared me for this throne. Whatever I have achieved today is because He had a purpose for my life.”
