An escaped cybercrime suspect, Asar Sesugh, has died following a gun battle involving operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Makurdi, Benue State.
According to the EFCC, Sesugh was among 26 suspected internet fraudsters arrested by its Makurdi Zonal Directorate on April 28, 2026. The suspects were profiled and remanded in custody after a court order was obtained.
The commission said Sesugh and two other suspects escaped from its holding facility on May 4 after requesting permission to use the toilet. They allegedly broke through the toilet roof and fled. Efforts to re-arrest them were initially unsuccessful.
EFCC spokesman, y Oyewale, said intelligence later revealed that Sesugh was hiding in the Kansho area of Makurdi.
When EFCC operatives moved to arrest him on May 21, the suspect and his alleged cult associates reportedly h of gunfire.
According to the EFCC, all the suspects fled the scene, but Sesugh was later found by the roadside with gunshot wounds. He was taken to the Police Cottage Hospital in Makurdi, where he was pronounced dead.
The commission stated that the incident has been j to the Benue State Police Command for investigation.
The Commission also dismissed claims circulating on social media that Sesugh died while in its custody, stressing that he had escaped detention and was not on bail at the time of his death.
While expressing condolences to the deceased’s family, the commission warned that it would not tolerate attacks on its operatives or breaches of its security facilities.
