Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, NCDC, has reportedly , placed Enugu, Lagos, the Federal Capital Territory, Kano, Rivers and six other states on the country’s highest Ebola preparedness alert following fears of possible importation of the deadly Bundibugyo strain spreading across parts of Central Africa.
The agency warned that Nigeria now faces a “high risk” of importing the virus due to regional transmission, heavy international travel, porous land borders and expanding trade routes linking 5 and Central Africa.
In a nationwide public health advisory reportedly issued to health commissioners in the 36 states and the FCT on Thursday, the NCDC directed all states to immediately strengthen surveillance systems, isolation centres, contact tracing mechanisms and infection prevention measures ahead of any possible outbreak.
The agency classified Lagos, FCT, Rivers, Kano, Enugu, Borno, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Taraba and Adamawa as high-risk states because of their international airports, seaports, border routes and intense population movement.
According to the NCDC, although no confirmed Ebola case has been recorded in Nigeria, its latest Dynamic Risk Assessment conducted with development partners showed the country remains highly vulnerable to importation of the disease.
The advisory followed the World Health Organisation’s declaration of the outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
The NCDC disclosed that 1,077 suspected cases and 247 deaths have already been reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, with a fatality rate estimated at 24.6 per cent.
“The overall risk of importation of the disease into Nigeria has been assessed as HIGH due to increasing ongoing regional transmission, international travel, regional population movement, major airports, seaports, porous land borders, informal crossings and trade routes,” the agency stated.
It added that all states must activate emergency preparedness measures capable of ensuring early detection, swift containment and protection of healthcare workers.
“The immediate objective of our national preparedness and readiness efforts is to ensure that every State and the FCT can reasonably detect, contain and respond swiftly to any suspected case while protecting health workers and sustaining essential health services,” the advisory stated.
The NCDC stressed that the Bundibugyo strain currently has no approved vaccine or specific treatment, warning that available Ebola vaccines and monoclonal antibody therapies were designed mainly for the Zaire strain and may not be effective against the ongoing outbreak.
Health workers nationwide were urged to maintain a high level of suspicion, especially because Ebola symptoms can initially resemble malaria, Lassa fever and other common febrile illnesses.
“Health workers must not wait for bleeding before suspecting Ebola in any patient with compatible symptoms and relevant travel or exposure history,” the agency warned.
Symptoms listed by the NCDC include fever, weakness, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, rash, unexplained bleeding, hiccups and signs of shock.
The agency also confirmed that its National Emergency Operations Centre had already been activated in alert mode to coordinate surveillance, case management, laboratory readiness, infection prevention and public communication across the country.
State governments were directed to ensure both public and private hospitals establish operational isolation systems, safe sample handling procedures and emergency response structures capable of managing suspected cases rapidly.
The NCDC assured Nigerians that it was working with state governments and development partners to strengthen national preparedness and prevent any possible community transmission of the virus.
