A female activist, Aisha Yesufu, has defected from the African Democratic Congress and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress, declaring her intention to contest the Federal Capital Territory senatorial seat on the platform of the NDC.
She made the announcement in a statement posted on her X handle on Wednesday, saying her decision followed what she described as a deeper understanding of the nation’s future and her continued support for former presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
According to her, Obi represents the hope and aspiration of a working Nigeria.
“The next couple of days will define the future of this nation. This deeper understanding is why I resigned from the African Democratic Congress to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress as I follow the leadership of HE Peter Obi, who today embodies the hope and aspiration of a Nigeria that works,” she said.
She explained that her initial decision to support Obi informed her move to the ADC, adding that joining the NDC was a continuation of that commitment.
“When I give my word, I keep it. My decision to support HE Peter Obi first led me to the ADC. To continue to honour the promise I am joining the NDC,” she said.
Yesuf disclosed that she would not only join the party as a member but would also seek elective office under its platform.
“This time I am joining the NDC not just as a member but as one running for the FCT Senatorial seat,” she said.
She noted that she concluded her responsibilities in the ADC before exiting the party and expressed gratitude to members of the party for the opportunity to serve in different capacities.
“I was fortunate to work with great and amazing people whose goal was a better country. I am grateful for the opportunity to have served as sub-committee chair, deputy committee chair, and secretary at various levels,” she stated.
Yesufu described her experience in the party as invaluable and thanked her colleagues for their cooperation and support.
