Lagos govt raises alarm over shortage of Doctors, needs 40,000 additional Doctors, others

Lagos State Governor , Babajide Sanwo-Olu has raised alarm over shortage of medical doctors in the state, saying that the state needs 40,000 additional doctors, 40,000 nurses and at least N100 billion in annual funding to prevent a worsening healthcare crisis.

Speaking at the Second Eko Health Convention on Thursday, the governor said Lagos currently has only about 7,000 doctors, leaving many physicians to perform the work of up to 10 colleagues.
To address the shortage, he said the state has begun recruiting health workers across its 29 secondary healthcare facilities, improved welfare packages and accommodation for medical personnel, and plans to establish a University of Medicine and Health Sciences to train more professionals.

Sanwo-Olu also said 1.5 million residents are now enrolled in the Ilera Eko health insurance scheme, while the state’s emergency Assistance in Distress Programme has saved 18 lives since its launch in March.

He added that Lagos is deploying digital health records, artificial intelligence and other technologies to improve healthcare delivery, stressing that the reforms are aimed at building a sustainable health system despite declining donor funding.
