Seventeen(17) members of the House of Representatives have defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), citing internal crises.
The mass defection was formally announced during Tuesday’s plenary by the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, who read their letters on the floor of the Green Chamber.
The lawmakers attributed their decision to lingering disputes and structural instability within the ADC, which they said had made it increasingly difficult to function effectively.
Those who defected include Yusuf Datti, Uchenna Okonkwo, Adamu Wakili, Thaddeus Attah, George Ozodinobi, Lilian Orogbu, Oluwaseyi Sowunmi, Peter Aniekwe, Mukhtar Zakari, George Oluwande, and Munachim Umezuruike.
Others are Emeka Idu, Jesse Onuakalusi, Ifeanyi Uzokwe, Afam Ogene, Murphy Omroruyi, and Abdulhakeem Ado.
The development is part of a broader wave of political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, as tensions continue to mount within the ADC. Party insiders have described the internal disagreements as disruptive and detrimental to cohesion.
In recent weeks, prominent political figures including Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso have also aligned with the NDC, further strengthening the emerging political bloc.
Obi, a former presidential candidate, explained that his decision followed “deep reflection” on Nigeria’s current state and the need to contribute more effectively to national development. He emphasised that his move was not driven by personal ambition but by a desire for a more stable political platform.
Similarly, Kwankwaso reportedly urged his supporters to prioritise unity and national progress over internal disputes and prolonged litigation.
