Xenophobia: Nigerians moves for evacuation as attacks escalate in South Africa

Nigerians living in the country are increasingly considering a return home, following rising attacks on foreign nationals and their businesses.
The Nigerian Consulate, in collaboration with the Nigerian Citizens Association in South Africa, has announced a free repatriation flight for Nigerians willing to leave permanently. The initiative comes as fear and uncertainty grip members of the Nigerian diaspora.
President of NICASA, Frank Onyekwelu, told Saturday PUNCH that the worsening situation had forced many Nigerians to shut down their businesses, with several already indicating interest in returning home.
He said, “The Nigerian Consulate in conjunction with NICASA has offered a free repatriation flight to any Nigerian who wishes to leave South Africa permanently, and the process is ongoing.”
Rising fear, violence
Reports indicate that violent anti-foreigner protests have spread across major cities including Pretoria, Johannesburg, Durban, East London
