Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu State Council, has commended the member representing Nkanu East/West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Nnoli Nnaji, for donating and installing solar-powered street lights at the NUJ Press Centre, Enugu.
The commendation was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the council’s monthly Congress held on August 27, 2026, at the Rt. Hon. Lawrence Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi Unity Hall, Press Centre, Enugu.
The Council described Nnaji’s gesture as a welcome intervention that would improve security and the general environment of the NUJ premises.
It also appealed to other political office holders, aspirants and well-meaning individuals to emulate the gesture by supporting initiatives aimed at improving the welfare and development of the council and its members.
The NUJ Congress also commended security agencies for their efforts in securing the safe release of the abducted seminarian, appreciating the sacrifices and commitment of security personnel to protecting citizens.
As the country gradually moves into the 2027 electioneering period, the Council urged political office holders and stakeholders to provide a level playing field for all aspirants, irrespective of political affiliation.
It called for peaceful and issue-based campaigns, urging political parties and their supporters to shun violence, hate speech, intimidation and other acts capable of threatening peace and security in Enugu State.
The Council further urged political parties and candidates to abide by the provisions of the peace accord and other relevant electoral guidelines throughout the electioneering period.
The NUJ also appealed to the Enugu State Government to review the reported N150 million charge imposed on aspirants seeking to erect campaign billboards.
While acknowledging the need for regulation of outdoor advertising, the Council said the charges should not become a financial barrier capable of discouraging or limiting political participation.
The Congress also felicitated the people and government of Enugu State on the 35th anniversary of the state’s creation, commending the progress recorded over the years and wishing the state continued peace and development.
