Gunmen kill Lagos NURTW organising secretary

Organising Secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Lagos State Council, Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Ijaya, has reportedly died after he was shot by unidentified gunmen in Lagos.


Ajiboye was attacked on Sunday night while returning home from his childhood neighbourhood in Fadeyi. The assailants intercepted his vehicle along the Ikorodu Road axis and opened fire, leaving the vehicle riddled with bullet holes.
Photos and videos from the scene showed the white vehicle with multiple bullet impacts on the windscreen and other parts of the body.

Initial reports indicated that Ajiboye and other occupants of the vehicle survived the attack with gunshot injuries. However, he was later confirmed dead after reportedly succumbing to his wounds.


Reacting to the incident, Lagos NURTW Chairman, Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle, (Sego), described the deceased as a loyal ally, trusted friend and committed union leader.


In a tribute posted on his Facebook page on Tuesday, Adekunle said Ajiboye’s dedication to the union and their political structure would be greatly missed.


“The news of the sudden passing of Comrade Toba Ajiboye has left me deeply saddened and heartbroken. It is difficult to come to terms with the loss of such a loyal, dependable, and committed ally,” he wrote.
He added that Ajiboye was “more than an ally,” describing him as a pillar of TeamSego and SegoNation whose unwavering support and selfless service would remain unforgettable.


Adekunle extended his condolences to the deceased’s family, friends and members of the NURTW, praying for God to grant him eternal rest and give his loved ones the strength to bear the loss.
Police authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the attack as of the time of filing this report.
