A serving member of the National Youth Service Corps, Abdulsamad Jamiu, has been killed after being caught in a crossfire during a robbery incident in Abuja.
The Nigerian Army confirmed the tragic incident on Sunday, stating that the corps member lost his life in the early hours of April 25, 2026, at Shagari Estate in the Dei-Dei area of the Federal Capital Territory.
According to the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters Guards Brigade, Lt. Olawuyi Odunola, troops of the Guards Brigade Quick
Response Group were on routine patrol when they received a distress call about an ongoing armed robbery attack.
“Upon arrival, the troops came under gunfire from the fleeing armed robbers, resulting in a brief but intense exchange,” Odunola said.
“In the course of the engagement, Mr Jamiu was caught in the crossfire. Despite efforts by troops to secure the area and preserve lives, he sadly succumbed to his injuries. This heartbreaking loss has cast a deep shadow over all personnel of the Guards Brigade.”
The Army spokesman explained that the situation was initially volatile as troops worked swiftly to repel the attackers and safeguard residents in the area.
He disclosed that the Commander of the Guards Brigade, alongside officers and soldiers, had extended condolences to the family of the deceased, the NYSC, and all those affected by the unfortunate incident.
Odunola further revealed that a full investigation had been launched to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding the killing, assuring that the findings would be made public.
The remains of the late corps member, he added, have been deposited at Kubwa General Hospital.
Reaffirming its commitment to the protection of lives and property within the FCT, the Guards Brigade noted that operational procedures would be reviewed to enhance civilian safety during security interventions.
Residents were also urged to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies in efforts to maintain peace and security across the territory.
