National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria has commenced an accreditation exercise at GOUNI Teaching Hospital, Enugu, to assess the hospital’s facilities and readiness for postgraduate medical training.
Chairman of the accreditation team, Prof. Ifedayo Odeniyi, disclosed this while addressing the medical staff of the hospital during the exercise on Monday.
Odeniyi said the accreditation process was designed to standardise medical practice and training in Nigeria, stressing that it was not aimed at witch-hunting any institution.
He explained that the exercise was intended to ensure that hospitals met the required minimum standards and provided resident doctors with adequate exposure, experience and training.
According to him, the assessment covers the hospital’s medical manpower, clinical structure, equipment, facilities and other requirements necessary for effective medical training and practice.
The team inspected various departments and units, including the medical wards, surgical ward, pharmacy, emergency unit and radiology department, among others.
Odeniyi said the team would, after completing the exercise, identify areas requiring improvement and forward recommendations to the hospital management.
He added that the recommendations would enable the institution to address identified gaps and strengthen its capacity to deliver quality medical training and healthcare services.
