A major section of the Oji–Awgu Federal Road in Enugu State has been completely washed away by severe erosion following Friday night’s heavy rainfall, disrupting vehicular movement and isolating communities
Leading an emergency assessment tour of the affected area, the Member representing Aninri/Awgu/Oji River Federal Constituency, Anayo Onwuegbu, described the incident a alarming, noting that he had raised concerns about the growing erosion threat on the road less than 48 hours earlier.
Onwuegbu appealed to the Federal Ministry of Works to treat the situation as an emergency, stressing the need for immediate intervention to restore connectivity and ease the hardship faced by residents and commuters.

Speaking, the Chairman of Oji River Local Government Area, Hon. Greg Anyaegbudike, commended the lawmaker’s swift response and efforts in facilitating the visit of the Federal Controller of Works to the site. He urged continued engagement with the ministry to secure approval for urgent reconstruction works.

The erosion site
On his part, the Federal Controller of Works in Enugu State, Smart Emesim, attributed the damage to improperly terminated culvert outlets that intensified water flow and weakened the road embankment. He assured residents that the ministry would commence the necessary processes to address the crisis with urgency.
The inspection team also examined four other erosion-prone locations along the road corridor, highlighting the growing threat to infrastructure in the area.
Other officials on the tour included Hon. Osita Eze, member representing Oji River State Constituency, and Awgu Council Chairman, Hon. Uche Okolo.
The visit ended with a renewed commitment by stakeholders to pursue immediate intervention and long-term solutions to safeguard lives, property, and transportation along the strategic federal road.
