Reckless motorcycle rider kills man in a wedding procession

A young man, Abubakar Haruna, has lost his life in a tragic motorcycle accident during a wedding procession in Potiskum, Yobe State.
The incident occurred on Friday evening during a bride conveyance celebration, when a group of youths escorting the bride reportedly rode motorcycles recklessly through a busy area of the town.
Eyewitnesses said the riders sped through the road, performed dangerous stunts and paid little attention to pedestrians and other road users.

The deceased’s brother, Muhammad Haruna, who confirmed the incident to the Newsmen said Abubakar was standing by the roadside when one of the riders rammed into him violently.
According to him, the impact threw the victim off balance and into a nearby drainage channel.

“My brother was standing by the roadside when one of the riders struck him violently on the head,” Muhammad said.
“Before anyone could help him, he had already died from the injuries.”
He described the incident as heartbreaking and avoidable, lamenting the growing trend of reckless motorcycle riding during wedding celebrations in the area.
“Every celebration now comes with dangerous displays on motorcycles. Innocent people are always at risk,” he said.
Muhammad called on the Yobe State Government and relevant authorities to strengthen safety regulations and enforce traffic laws to prevent similar tragedies.
“If the government does not act now, more innocent lives may be lost through carelessness and indiscipline,” he warned.
He also demanded justice for his late brother, insisting that the rider responsible for the accident must be identified and prosecuted.

Residents of Potiskum expressed sadness over the incident, describing it as another indication of worsening safety concerns during public celebrations.
Community leaders also stressed the need for greater public awareness, discipline and responsible conduct among youths during social events.
Potiskum, one of the most populated towns in Yobe State, has in recent times witnessed rising concerns over public safety during festivities and large gatherings.
Residents are now hoping the latest tragedy will compel authorities to take urgent action to curb reckless behaviour on the roads.
