Zamfara Assembly passes state police bill

Zamfara State House of Assembly has passed the proposed constitutional amendment seeking the establishment of state police services across Nigeria, saying the move will strengthen efforts to tackling insecurity.

The Speaker, Malam Bilyaminu Moriki, disclosed this on Monday in Gusau while briefing Newsmen on the activities of the Assembly.
The National Assembly had on September 16 transmitted the Constitution Alteration Bill on the establishment of State Police Services to the 36 state Houses of Assembly for consideration.

For the constitutional amendment to become effective, it must be approved by at least two-thirds of the 36 state legislatures.
Moriki said the Zamfara Assembly supported the bill because state police would provide additional manpower and support to existing security agencies in confronting security challenges.

He said the resolution was also in line with efforts by the Federal Government and the Zamfara State Government, led by Governor Dauda Lawal, to improve security in the state and across the country.
Meanwhile, Moriki said the recent defection of eight lawmakers from the All Progressives Congress would not affect the functioning of the Assembly.

He explained that six of the lawmakers had been suspended since February 26, 2024, over alleged gross misconduct, conspiracy, mischief, contempt of the House and violation of its standing orders.
According to him, another affected lawmaker is no longer a member of the Assembly as his seat had already been declared vacant.

Moriki urged members of the public to distinguish between the lawmakers’ political decisions and the disciplinary measures taken against them, stressing that the seventh Assembly remained committed to the rule of law, legislative integrity and the protection of public institutions.

The Oyo State House of Assembly had earlier, on September 30, passed the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, seeking to establish a constitutional framework for the operation of state police services nationwide.
