African Airlines Association has admitted Enugu Air as its 50th member, a development expected to strengthen Nigeria’s position in the continent’s aviation industry and support the airline’s expansion plans.
AFRAA announced the admission in Nairobi on Wednesday, saying the development reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the growth of African carriers and improving air connectivity across the continent.
Speaking on the occasion, AFRAA Secretary-General, Abdérahmane Berthé, welcomed Enugu Air into the association, describing the airline as an example of the homegrown investment needed to build resilient air connectivity in Africa.
“We are delighted to welcome Enugu Air into the AFRAA fraternity. As a state-backed carrier serving Nigeria’s rapidly expanding domestic market, Enugu Air represents the kind of homegrown investment that is vital to building resilient air connectivity across our continent,” Berthé said.
He added that AFRAA would support the airline through the International Air Transport Association Operational Safety Audit certification process and its continued growth.
In his reaction, the CEO of Enugu Air, Capt. Tolu Ita, described the admission as a major milestone in the airline’s short history.
“We are honoured to join the AFRAA fraternity. This membership underscores Enugu Air’s commitment to safe, reliable, and affordable air travel for Nigerians while contributing to the vision of a unified African aviation market,” Ita said.
Founded on July 7, 2025, Enugu Air commenced commercial operations with Embraer E170/E190/E195 aircraft.
The airline, headquartered in Enugu and operating from the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, currently serves nine domestic destinations, including Enugu, Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Kano and Benin City.
The airline plans to expand its network across Nigeria before launching regional and international routes to other parts of Africa, Europe and beyond.
The admission brings Enugu Air into an association whose members collectively account for more than 85 per cent of international traffic carried by African airlines.
Founded in Accra, Ghana, in April 1968 and headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, AFRAA promotes the interests of African airlines and champions the development of the continent’s aviation industry.
The association’s vision is to foster a sustainable, interconnected and affordable African air transport industry, with African airlines playing a key role in the continent’s economic development.
