Criticism of President Bola Tinubu by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has continued to generate reactions, with politicians, commentators and civil society figures defending the bishops’ decision to speak openly about the country’s economic hardship, insecurity and governance challenges.
Former lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, said the Catholic bishops have maintained a long-standing tradition of “speaking truth to power” regardless of the government in office.
Writing on X, he said the bishops had consistently remained non-partisan from the military era through successive civilian administrations.
“The Catholic Bishops have a consistent history of telling truth to power. They have never been partisan. Every President they visited, they bring him a gift of bitter kola instead of olive oil,” he wrote.
Public affairs analyst and publisher, Maazi Tochukwu Ezeoke, also criticised the Presidency’s response to remarks made by Cardinal John Onaiyekan after the bishops’ meeting with President Tinubu.
In an article titled “Temitope Ajayi’s Attack on Cardinal Onaiyekan Reveals a Presidency That Fears the Truth,” Ezeoke argued that attacking the Cardinal instead of addressing the issues he raised reflected intolerance for criticism.
He maintained that the bishops merely echoed the concerns of millions of Nigerians over rising inflation, insecurity, unemployment and the high cost of living, insisting that religious leaders have a moral responsibility to speak on issues affecting society.
According to him, governments confident in their performance respond to criticism with evidence rather than personal attacks, warning that attempts to silence dissent undermine democratic accountability.
The controversy also attracted reactions on social media and WhatsApp platforms, where contributors defended the bishops and accused the Presidency of attempting to discredit respected clerics for raising concerns about the country’s condition.
Meanwhile, former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Comrade Timi Frank, commended the Catholic bishops for what he described as their courage in telling President Tinubu “the bitter truth” about the nation’s challenges.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday, Frank urged other Christian and Muslim religious leaders to emulate the bishops by speaking truth to power and demanding greater accountability from government.
“We commend the Catholic leaders for their courage. We have not seen this kind of courage from religious leaders in Nigeria for a long time. They were brave enough to look the President in the face and tell him the bitter truth,” he said.
Frank called on President Tinubu to heed the bishops’ advice, arguing that doing so would help restore public confidence in his administration.
He also accused some religious leaders of failing to challenge government after visiting the Presidential Villa and alleged that the current administration had worsened corruption, insecurity, poverty and unemployment while weakening democratic institutions.
Frank further urged the President to respect democratic institutions and ensure free, fair and credible elections, while encouraging religious leaders across the country to continue speaking openly on issues affecting Nigerians.
The latest reactions come amid sustained public debate over the exchanges between the Presidency and members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference following their recent engagement with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.
