An unknown number of students were feared trapped on Monday after a three-storey hostel, Elite Five Star Lodge, collapsed in Amokpala, Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The building, located beside Tonimas Filling Station, reportedly collapsed in the early hours of Monday while occupants, believed to be mainly students, were inside.
The incident sparked panic among residents and passers-by as emergency responders, security personnel and volunteers rushed to the scene to search for survivors buried beneath the rubble.
An eyewitness, identified simply as Ifeoma, said residents heard a loud noise moments before the building gave way.
“We heard a very loud noise before the building collapsed. The sound attracted many residents and students, who rushed to the scene. Immediately after the noise, those inside started shouting for help as the building fell,” she said.
Officials of the Anambra State Fire Service, the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and other emergency agencies commenced rescue operations shortly after the incident.
Confirming the collapse, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said a police-led Joint Security Team swiftly responded to the distress call, secured the area and coordinated rescue efforts with other agencies.
According to him, some injured victims have already been rescued from the debris and taken to a hospital in Oko for treatment, while efforts continue to reach others who may still be trapped.
Ikenga noted that the exact number of casualties or affected persons had yet to be determined, urging members of the public to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information and keep away from the scene to allow emergency workers unhindered access.
Rescue operations were still ongoing as of the time of filing this report, with authorities promising to provide further updates as more verified information becomes available.
