Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command attached to the Adani Division, in collaboration with members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group, on 18th January 2026 at about 6:00 a.m., foiled a kidnapping attempt at the Ngene-Ukwu axis of the Adani–Nsukka Road following an intense gun duel with armed kidnapping suspects.
The Police public relations officer of Enugu state police command , SP Daniel Ndukwe in a statement made available to Newsmen on Monday in Enugu, said, during the exchange of gunfire, one of the suspects was neutralised, while an AK-47 rifle loaded with two rounds of live ammunition was recovered. Other members of the criminal gang escaped with varying degrees of gunshot injuries.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the neutralised suspect and other members of the kidnapping gang had emerged from a nearby bush with the intent to kidnap occupants of a vehicle plying the route. Upon sighting the operatives, the suspects opened fire, but the operatives responded with superior firepower, leading to the neutralisation of one of the kidnappers, while the others fled into the surrounding forest.
“Efforts have been intensified to trace, identify, and arrest the fleeing suspects, as well as dismantle the entire criminal network. Members of the public, particularly residents and healthcare providers in the area, are urged to promptly report anyone presenting with gunshot wounds or suspicious injuries to the nearest Police Station or security formation.
“The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, has commended the gallantry and professionalism displayed by the joint operatives. He reassures the public of the unwavering commitment of the Police and other security agencies to rid Enugu State of violent criminal elements and ensure the continued safety and security of all residents.”, Ndukwe said.
