Under Ezeh, the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology has spearheaded several initiatives aimed at transforming Enugu from a coal-dependent economy into a knowledge-driven digital powerhouse, aligning with Governor Peter Mbah ‘s vision of driving “coal to code vision.’
One of the flagship programmes is the Enugu Tech Festival, popularly branded “Coal to Code.” The initiative has brought together local and international tech players, startups, students and investors to explore opportunities in artificial intelligence, software development, cybersecurity and digital entrepreneurship

The ministry has also partnered with private sector players to launch cybersecurity and data science training programmes, including “Code Your Defence,” equipping young people with industry-relevant skills. Participants say the training has opened doors to remote work, startup creation and global digital opportunities.
In addition, plans are underway to establish an Artificial Intelligence Centre of Excellence in the state, a move aimed at positioning Enugu as a leading AI innovation hub in Nigeria.
The ministry has supported hackathons, smart education initiatives and youth innovation challenges designed to nurture problem-solving skills among students and young entrepreneurs.
Observers also point to improvements in e-governance systems, including digitised services and technology-driven public sector reforms, as evidence of the administration’s commitment to efficiency and transparency.
Youth participants at recent hackathons described the initiatives as “life-changing,” saying they now see Enugu as a viable destination for tech careers rather than relocating to Lagos or Abuja
A Growing Digital Reputation
With increasing investments in digital skills development, innovation platforms and tech-driven governance, Enugu’s transformation drive appears to be gaining national attention.
For many observers, the NUJ recognition signals growing confidence in the state’s digital roadmap.
As Enugu advances its transition from coal to code, stakeholders say sustained collaboration between government, the media, and the private sector will be critical in ensuring that technology becomes a true catalyst for inclusive growth and long-term prosperity.
