Court fines 17 residents ₦40,000 each for open defecation, urination

Magistrate Court in Lagos has convicted and fined 17 residents ₦40,000 each for engaging in open defecation and urination.


The Lagos State Government disclosed that via its official X handle on Saturday, stating that the offenders were apprehended by the Lagos Waste Management Authority during routine environmental enforcement operations


According to the state government, the suspects were arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, where they were convicted and given the option of paying a ₦40,000 fine each or serving one month imprisonment.
The state described the acts as unacceptable and degrading to public spaces, stressing that such behaviour defaces the image of Lagos as a megacity.


“These acts have never been acceptable, as they degrade public spaces and deface our megacity. The government remains resolute and will continue to clamp down on defaulters to ensure a cleaner, healthier Lagos for all,” the statement read.
The government reiterated its commitment to strict enforcement of environmental sanitation laws and urged residents to take responsibility for maintaining a clean environment.

The state government also called on members of the public to remain vigilant and support efforts aimed at promoting hygiene and public health across the state.
