Determined to greatly reduce and possibly eliminate diabetes – related illness including limb loss in, Enugu, Nigeria, Enugu Metropolitan Lions Club is set to collaborate with the Lower Extremity Amputation Prevention (LEAP) Alliance to ensure prevention of diabetes, particularly, diabetic amputations.

Lion Edozie noted that the collaborative effort will replicate a successful United States model under name “The Lions Hunt for Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy and Peripheral Artery Disease “

According to the director of LEAP ALLIANCE, Podiatrist Lawrence Rubin, this programme will involve free foot screening events to identify critical risk factors like diabetic peripheral neuropathy ( nerve damage) and peripheral artery disease (poor circulation) in their earliest stages, allowing for prompt preventive treatment before complications become severe.
“The goal is simple: to reach patients at risk before an amputation becomes necessary and identifying the early signs of neuropathy and artery disease through these free screenings, intervene effectively and drastically improve patient outcomes; said Dr Rubin

The group members
Also a physiotherapist, Kalu Confidence, added that the collaboration will be a game-changer for the Enugu community. The ‘Lions Hunt’ will provide life-saving screenings to those who need it most, empowering them to take control of their health and prevent the devastating consequences of diabetic complications.”
The Enugu Metropolitan Lions Club will manage the on-the-ground implementation of the screening events, utilizing their network and community reach to mobilize participants and provide access to essential care.
