Determined to make life better for the people of the state and to build a world class smart city, Enugu state government has approved the construction of secondary and tertiary roads, integrated infrastructure in the new Enugu city.
The State Government has also approved the rehabilitation of the Ajali and Oji,-River water scheme to be producing 77,000 cubic water per day.
This was disclosed to newsmen by the State Commissioner for Information ,Dr. Malachy Agbo while highlighting the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting held on Thursday Evening in Government House Enugu.

Giving details on the approvals given on road projects and other infrastructure, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Hon. Benjamin Okoh said the state government approved construction of secondary and tertiary roads and all associated integrated utilities for phase 1 A of the new Enugu city
He disclosed that the state government has embarked on the development of Enugu New Citx and had approved 10,000 Hectares of land for the construction of the new Enugu city..
According to him, the projects will be in phases, Phase 1, Phase 2 and t Phase 3.
He said they had commenced development in Phase 1. and ” Phase 1 is also divided into three, phases, (Phase 1A, Phase 1B and Phase 1C). Hon. Okoh explained that Phase 1A is 1,000 hectares .
Describing the size of the land he said, ” if you know Lagos very well, the entire Victoria Island in Lagos is sitting on 500 hectares. So, what we are talking about is Victoria Island, Lagos multiplied by two.”

The Commissioner said they had completed the asphalt binder course for the entire primary road leading into the new Enugu City, which covers to the end of Phase 1A, which is 6.5 kilometres.
His words, “We finished the asphalt binder. The delivery timeline for that is supposed to be in May, 2026, , but we are already ahead of time. The entire primary road for that Phase 1A will be delivered before the end of March this year with all the facilities That has also informed the decision of the state to embark on the construction of the secondary and tertiary roads that will cover the entire Phase 1 and this is not just construction of roads, It is integrated infrastructure development”.
Hon. Okoh emphasised that , “the New Enugu City is not just a city”.. He said, ” it is the second city in the entire country that the construction is integrated infrastructure.
“All the services that are going to be provided there are going to be done underground. We are not going to have any electrical pole or any electrical wire that will be there. We have the telecommunication doors. We have the electrical doors. We have the water scheme.We have the gas lines. Everything is going to be underground. That is what we are providing at the new Enugu City..
“It is a complete and Smart city. All the plots are going to be serviced . So, there is nothing like you buy a plot of land and you start connecting electricity poles, and you start digging sewage”..

The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure went further to say that , “All the sewage lines, all the water lines, the power system , all of them are integrated. All of them are underground. So, it is going to be a game changer in terms of infrastructure development in the state”.
He told newsmen that the construction of secondary and tertiary roads had been awarded to the China Communication Construction Company( the company that is already undertaking the construction of the primary road network in that new Enugu City).
Hon Okoh disclosed that the projects will commence in February, 2026 and it is going to be completed in December 2026
With a sense of fulfilment , he said, “” That is one of the major milestones that we are going to be having in terms of infrastructure development in this state”.

Speaking on water project, the Commissioner for Water Resources, Hon. Ben Collins Ndu Jnr., said the state Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah has also approved the rehabilitation of the Ajalli Water Scheme and the upgrade of the Oji -River water facilities, which are expected to boost water production to about 77,000 cubic metres per day to improve water supply across Enugu metropolis.

On his part, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Lloyd Ekweremadu,Jnr. said the state government has reiterated its commitment to hosting the 2026 Enugu City International Marathon in May, as well as the 23rd National Sports Festival, coming up in November 2026.
He said the state governor had assured that necessary facilities and amenities will be put in place to ensure the successful hosting of the events and promotion of social development in the state.
Ekweremadu added that they will build on the experiences of the 2025 Enugu City International marathon,adding that more Athletes will participate this year..
