As part of it’s efforts to strengthening food security, improve livestock productivity and boost rural livelihoods, the Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to eradicate Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), a highly contagious viral disease affecting sheep and goats, by 2030 .
The commitment was reaffirmed during a two-day stakeholders’ workshop held in Abuja to review and update Nigeria’s National Strategic Plan for the Control and Eradication of PPR for the 2026–2030 period.
Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, Mrs Chinyere Akujobi, said eliminating the disease is not only an animal health priority but also a national development objective capable of reducing poverty, increasing household incomes and expanding livestock trade.
She noted that Nigeria remains committed to the global campaign led by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) to eliminate PPR by 2030.
Akujobi said the government has intensified disease surveillance, laboratory strengthening, outbreak investigations, targeted vaccination campaigns, stakeholder engagement and capacity-building programmes to reduce the burden of the disease while improving response systems.
According to her, Nigeria, with an estimated population of over 200 million sheep and goats—the largest in Africa—must strengthen disease control because of its extensive livestock trade with neighbouring Niger, Benin, Cameroon and Chad.
She explained that the revised national strategy would integrate veterinary services with cross-border trade standards and risk mitigation measures to ensure effective disease control.
The ministry also pledged to develop a fully costed implementation plan backed by a sustainable resource mobilisation strategy to achieve the eradication target.
Chief Veterinary Officer of Nigeria, Dr Samuel Anzaku, said although the country has made significant progress in animal disease control, the strategic plan must be updated to align with the Global PPR Eradication Programme, regional ECOWAS coordination mechanisms and international performance benchmarks.
He stressed the need for improved disease hotspot mapping, risk-based vaccination, stronger laboratory-epidemiology collaboration and the integration of recent surveillance data to accelerate Nigeria’s progress towards becoming a PPR-free nation.
Also speaking, the African Union Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources described the eradication of PPR as a strategic investment that would strengthen livestock systems, reduce poverty, empower women and youths, and improve food security across Africa.
The renewed campaign follows the inauguration of a 33-member National Technical Working Group earlier this year to coordinate Nigeria’s response to the disease, which continues to threaten the livelihoods of pastoralists and smallholder farmers while limiting livestock trade across the region.
