Bye-election: Enugu Police enforce movement restriction, ban armed escorts

Commissioner of Police , Enugu state Police Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has reiterated the ban on armed escorts and unauthorized armed security personnel at polling units and other restricted areas ahead of the Enugu North Senatorial Bye-Election scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026.

The police boss stated that only police officers and other security operatives officially deployed for election duties would be allowed in and around polling units during the exercise.

He explained that armed personnel assigned for election security would provide outer-cordon security, conduct patrols and respond to any security incidents that may arise.

CP Giwa also restated the restriction of human and vehicular movement from midnight to 6:00 p.m. on election day across the six local government areas participating in the election — Igbo-Etiti, Igbo-Eze North, Igbo-Eze South, Nsukka, Udenu and Uzo-Uwani.

According to him, the restriction exempts only electoral officials, accredited observers, journalists and persons engaged in verifiable essential duties.
The commissioner warned political parties, candidates, supporters, voters and residents against acts capable of disrupting the peaceful conduct of the poll, stressing that violators would face the full weight of the law.

He urged residents and other stakeholders to remain law-abiding, vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements, activities and electoral offences to the nearest police station or relevant security agencies.
The statement was issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu State Command, SP Daniel Ndukwe.
