NAWOJ commends Enugu Ministry for quick response to murder incident

‎Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Enugu State Chapter, has commended the Enugu State Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development for its swift and firm response to the alleged murder of Mrs. Onyinyechi Okoh, who was reportedly killed by her husband, Livinus Okoh, in Amuri, Nkanu West Local Government Area.

‎In a statement jointly signed by the Chairperson of NAWOJ, Comrade Ngozi Ngene, and the secretary , Comrade Nnenna Igwe, NAWOJ commended the Commissioner, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, for her prompt condemnation of the act and for reaffirming the Enugu State Government’s zero-tolerance policy towards Gender-Based Violence.

‎Comrade Ngene described the killing as “a painful reminder of the dangers women face in abusive relationships,” urging women to speak out early and flee from violence before it escalates.

‎“When you see danger, please run walk away and live to tell your story. Silence is deadly , speaking out saves lives,” she said.

‎While mourning the victim, Mrs. Okoh, NAWOJ called on communities to support survivors of domestic violence and report all cases of abuse promptly. The Association specifically appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, community heads, and other stakeholders to take a firm stand, condemn such acts openly, and work together to prevent further tragedies.

‎NAWOJ stressed that silence and complacency only embolden perpetrators and weaken the fight against Gender-Based Violence. The Association reaffirmed its readiness to partner with the Ministry, law enforcement agencies, and civil society organizations to strengthen advocacy, promote gender equality, and ensure justice for all victims across Enugu State.

  1. Improving people’s lives , not only speeches is commendable and a welcomed one. Government should embark on poverty alleviation, reducing costs of living and improve, increase standards of living for the citizens.
However, domestic violence is highly condemnable. Fights don’t settle issues rather worsen it. Let’s run away from hitting other when misunderstanding occurs. May the soul of Mrs Okoh and faithful rest in peace of christ Jesus 🙏
