No life lost in Enugu tanker fire incident – Fire service

Contrary to rumours making the rounds that over Sixty people died in a fuel-ladened tanker fire incident at the Ugwu-Onyeama axis of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, the Enugu state Fire service says, ” no life was lost”.

The state’s Chief Fire Officer, Okwudili Ohaa, who gave the confirmation on Wednesday in Enugu, noting that “no life was lost in the incident”.

Ohaa, who is also Director of Enugu State Fire Service, noted that the incident happened at about 10 p.m. on Tuesday before the personnel of Enugu State Fire Service rushed to extinguish the raging inferno and get it under control.

He said, “we were able to extinguish the fire after sometime; and thereby, rescued the entire vegetation and nearby Iva Valley community.

“Today, normal traffic flow has returned in that axis of the expressway,” he said.

He revealed that the driver of the tanker and his “motor-boy”, who sustained injuries, were immediately taken to a nearby hospital by officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) noting that it was a lone accident involving only the fuel-ladened tanker.

Ohaa added that the tanker lost control and plunged into a valley at the Ugwu-Onyeama axis Enugu–Onitsha Expressway before bursting into huge flames.

As at the time of filing this report, efforts made to get the authorities of the FRSC to officially give account of the incident proved abortive.
