Nigerian Air Force on Monday confirmed that an ATR-42 military aircraft crashed in the Igbokoda area of Ondo State while on a routine flight from Benin, Edo State, to Lagos, with search and rescue operations immediately launched for those on board.
The aircraft, with tail number NGR 931, lost contact with air traffic controllers at about 9:13am, according to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.
The Nigerian Air Force Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said the aircraft was on a routine mission when the accident occurred on October 5.
He said the NAF had activated an immediate search and rescue operation in coordination with relevant authorities and emergency response agencies.
“The Nigerian Air Force is committed to ensuring the success of the ongoing Search and Rescue efforts. Further details will be communicated in due course,” Ejodame said.
Although the NAF did not disclose the number of people aboard or confirm casualties, Keyamo said preliminary information indicated that 25 passengers and seven crew members, totalling 32 people, were on the aircraft.
Keyamo had earlier disclosed that air traffic controllers lost communication with the aircraft after repeated attempts to raise it by radio proved unsuccessful.
He later confirmed that the aircraft had crashed close to the Naval Base in Igbokoda and that its wreckage had been located.
The minister said he had spoken with the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, and assured the Nigerian Air Force of the ministry’s cooperation and assistance in the rescue efforts.
Keyamo also clarified that the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority do not have regulatory authority over military aircraft.
As of the time of filing the report, search and rescue operations were still ongoing, while the NAF had yet to release further details on the condition of those aboard.
