ESUTH Parklane set for Postgraduate accreditation, receives over N500m surgical equipment

Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH) Parklane is set for postgraduate accreditation by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the West African College of Surgeons. This followed Governor Peter Mbah administration ‘s major investments in medical infrastructure, manpower and the purchase of over N500 million worth of surgical and specialised medical equipment by the Enugu State Government.

The Chief Medical Director , ESUTH Parklane, Prof. Bethrand Ngwu, disclosed this on Friday, September 25,2026 in his office in Enugu while briefing newsmen on the teaching hospital’s preparedness for the accreditation exercise.
Ngwu said the hospital was preparing its main theatre and Accident and Emergency units, among other critical departments, for the exercise, stressing that accreditation for a teaching hospital is distinct from that of the university.

According to him, the Nigerian Medical and Dental Council has allocated 350 training slots to ESUTH, after it’s recent accreditation, creating an opportunity for the hospital to expand postgraduate medical training for doctors seeking specialist qualifications through the National Postgraduate Medical College and the West African College of Surgeons.

He attributed the progress to the commitment of the Enugu state Governor , Dr Peter Mbah, saying the governor had provided the resources and equipment required to reposition ESUTH Parklane and make the accreditation possible.

Ngwu said some of the major equipment received by the hospital included five new patient monitors, three ventilators, image intensifiers, large X-ray machines, operating tables and other specialised operating-theatre equipment.

He explained that some of the equipment were specifically meant to strengthen neurosurgery and orthopaedic surgery, adding that they were of international standard and would significantly improve the hospital’s capacity to manage complex surgical cases and train resident doctors.

The CMD said ESUTH currently had one of the strongest manpower bases among teaching hospitals in the south east zone , with about 540 nurses, 126 full-time consultants, 50 part-time consultants, 130 house officers and a large complement of pharmacists, Radiographers, resident doctors across different specialties among others

He added that the state government had also been funding medical residency training for doctors, describing the investment as crucial to developing and retaining specialist manpower.

Ngwu said the hospital was also working to ensure that its Accident and Emergency unit operates autonomously, in line with the requirements for a modern tertiary healthcare facility.

He described ESUTH Parklane as one of the leading hospitals in the South-East, saying the ongoing transformation was aimed at bringing the institution to international standards.
The CMD said the planned accreditation would strengthen specialist training and expand the hospital’s capacity to handle complex medical cases.

He further said with the planned International Hospital in Enugu becoming operational, ESUTH would remain strategically positioned to handle referrals and cases requiring tertiary specialist care.

On the recent industrial action at the hospital, Ngwu said it was embarked upon by resident doctors and lasted only a few days before it was called off.
He also dismissed reports suggesting that the upgraded Accident and Emergency unit was designed for wealthy or elite patients.
According to him, the facility is open to both rich and poor patients, stressing that access to treatment would not be determined by social or economic status.
Ngwu said the ongoing investments demonstrated Governor Mbah’s determination to reposition ESUTH Parklane as a modern tertiary healthcare institution capable of providing advanced treatment while also serving as a major centre for postgraduate medical training.
