Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the final list of candidates contesting the 2027 National Assembly elections, with 4,408 candidates cleared for Senate and House of Representatives elections.
An analysis of the candidate documents published by the electoral commission shows that 1,195 candidates are vying for the 109 Senate seats, while 3,213 candidates are contesting seats in the House of Representatives.
The list also reveals a wide gender disparity, with 3,965 male candidates compared with only 443 female candidates across the two chambers.
For the Senate, 1,080 candidates are male, while 115 are female. In the House of Representatives, 2,885 candidates are male and 328 are female.
The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) recorded the highest number of female candidates, fielding 11 women for Senate seats and 42 for the House of Representatives.
The publication of the final National Assembly list comes as INEC intensifies preparations for the 2027 general elections.
According to the commission’s election timetable, the presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, while governorship and State House of Assembly elections are slated for February 6, 2027.
The latest development follows INEC’s release on Saturday of the final list of presidential and vice-presidential candidates for the 2027 elections.
The presidential list contains 18 candidates and their running mates across various political parties and was signed by the INEC Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony.
