Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old man, identified as Pascal Ogbogu, for killing his 56-year-old father with a machete in Abatete, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.
The suspect was arrested in the early hours of Wednesday, August 26, 2026, following a coordinated effort by the police, family members and members of the Abatete Vigilante.
The Anambra state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement made available to Newsmen on Wednesday in Awka, saying the Commissioner of Police, Nnanna Oji Ama, commended members of the community for their prompt response and assistance in apprehending the suspect
According to Ikenga, preliminary information indicated that the suspect allegedly attacked his father on the evening of Tuesday, August 25, before fleeing the scene.
“Following a distress report, Police operatives from the Eziowelle Police Division, with the assistance of family members and members of the Abatete Vigilante, promptly mobilised to the scene, where they found the lifeless body of the deceased in a pool of blood, with a deep machete wound to the throat,” he said.Ikenga added that the deceased’s body was evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
He said the suspect, who reportedly fled after the incident, was apprehended through the coordinated efforts of the police and the Abatete Vigilante, aided by timely information from community members.
The police spokesman quoted the CP as commending the family members, community residents, police operatives and vigilante personnel for their cooperation.Ama stressed that effective community participation, timely information sharing and strong partnerships between security agencies and local communities remained vital to successful policing and the protection of lives and property.
The Commissioner of Police, while commiserating with the family of the deceased, directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and a comprehensive review
.He assured the family and 8 of the public that the investigation would be conducted professionally and thoroughly, in accordance with the law, while the suspect would be made to face due process upon conclusion of the investigation.
