Cross River State Police Command has arrested two elderly men over the alleged attempted rape of a 12-year-old girl in the Thomas Henshaw area of Calabar.
The suspects, identified as 68-year-old shoe repairer, Moris Monday, and 70-year-old Asuquo Effiom, were arrested on August 23, 2026, following a complaint by the girl’s father.
The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists in Calabar on Monday.
According to the statement, preliminary investigation revealed that Monday allegedly lured the minor into his room and attempted to sexually assault her on August 13 and 14.
Effiom was also accused of luring the girl into his room and attempting to sexually assault her on August 22.
“Following receipt of the complaint, Police investigators proceeded to the Hokins Road area by Thomas Henshaw Junction, where the suspects were found in the custody of community members and were taken into Police custody,” the statement said.
Eitokpah said the suspects had made statements to the police but denied the allegations.
He added that the victim had been referred to a government-approved medical facility for examination.
The police spokesperson said the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for discreet investigation and necessary legal action.
The command assured the public that the matter would be handled professionally and in accordance with the law, adding that further developments would be communicated as the investigation progresses.
