Enugu State Police Command has arrested 14 suspected members of an organised kidnapping syndicate allegedly responsible for a series of abductions and a murder in different parts of the state.
Commissioner of Police, Enugu Police Command, Mamman Giwa disclosed that while briefing Newsmen on Friday in at the State Police Command Headquarters, GRA, Enugu.
According to him, the suspects were arrested in intelligence-led operations conducted in Enugu and several other states, including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Kogi, Nasarawa, Rivers, Kwara and Taraba,
Giwa also disclosed that the arrests followed sustained human and technical intelligence gathering, inter-agency collaboration and coordinated operations.

The Commissioner of police added that the suspects had, during interrogation, confessed to their involvement in several recent and past kidnapping incidents across Enugu State.
Among the exhibits recovered from the suspects, according to the CP, were five AK-47 rifles, two pump-action guns, one locally fabricated firearm, 310 rounds of live 7.62 x 39mm ammunition, eight live cartridges and seven AK-47 empty magazines
The police boss said the latest breakthrough was connected to the kidnapping of three persons from a church at Inoyi, Affa Community, in Udi Local Government Area.
According to him, one of the victims was rescued on August 2, 2026, while subsequent joint operations led to the rescue of the remaining two victims, arrest of three suspects, neutralisation of one suspect and recovery of ransom money, firearms, ammunition and other incriminating exhibits.
He added that the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Violent Crime Response Unit, AK-VCRU, subsequently arrested two additional suspects linked to the Affa church kidnapping.
The two suspects, he said, had fled to Port Harcourt, Rivers State, following the pressure mounted by security operatives but were traced, arrested and brought back to Enugu.
“Preliminary investigation reveals that, after fleeing Enugu, the suspects regrouped with their cohorts in Port Harcourt and abducted another victim, who was released after a ransom of ₦5,000,000 was paid,” Giwa said.
The arrested suspects
He explained that the 14 suspects were members of an organised criminal network operating from different parts of the country, with members converging in Enugu to plan and execute kidnapping operations before returning to their various locations.
He said investigations had also uncovered the roles played by some Enugu-based members of the syndicate.
According to him, one member allegedly used a tricycle to transport gang members, firearms and other criminal implements to and from operational locations, while another provided intelligence that enabled the gang to evade security surveillance and identify potential victims and locations.
The suspects, he said, had confessed to their involvement in kidnapping operations along the Enugu-Ugwuogo-Opi-Nsukka Road; Obioma-9th Mile-Umulumgbe-Okpatu Road; Eke-Affa-Egede-Ezinze axis, as well as various locations in Ezeagu Local Government Area.
Giwa said preliminary investigations had specifically linked the suspects to at least four major kidnapping operations in Enugu State, involving ransom payments running into millions of naira and tens of thousands of United States dollars.
The incidents include the abduction of a male victim at Mgbabuowa/Aguobuowa, Ezeagu LGA, on May 25, 2026, during which the gang allegedly collected ₦5.5 million as ransom.
The syndicate was also allegedly involved in the May 9, 2026 abduction of two male victims at Obioma, Udi LGA, during which a female victim was allegedly shot and killed. The gang reportedly obtained $28,700 in ransom from the incident.
Similarly, the suspects were linked to the abduction of two male victims along the Eke-Ezinze Road, Udi LGA, on April 10, 2026, for which $70,000 was allegedly paid as ransom.
The gang was further linked to the kidnapping of seven victims at Obinaofia, Ezeagu LGA, on April 12, 2026, during which ₦25 million was reportedly obtained as ransom.
These four incidents alone represent ransom payments of at least ₦30.5 million and $98,700, excluding other kidnapping incidents and ransom payments allegedly disclosed by the suspects during interrogation
Giwa told Newsmen that investigations had also revealed that the suspects allegedly laundered and concealed proceeds of their criminal activities through investments in livestock and properties.
He said some of the proceeds were also allegedly spent on lavish lifestyles, conspicuous consumption and overseas travels, including trips to neighbouring countries such as Cameroon.
The Commissioner said the Command was widening its investigation to establish the suspects’ involvement in other kidnapping and violent-crime incidents within and outside Enugu State.
He said the police were also working to identify and arrest other members of the syndicate and recover additional firearms, ammunition and proceeds of crime.
“Upon conclusion of investigation, the suspects will be charged to court in accordance with extant laws,” he assured.
The Commissioner attributed the recent breakthroughs to the effectiveness of sustained intelligence gathering, ICT-enabled investigation, inter-agency collaboration, inter-state cooperation and coordinated operational policing.
He assured the people of Enugu State that the Command remained resolute in its offensive against kidnapping, armed robbery, murder, rape, cultism and other violent crimes.
“Our intelligence assets and operational teams remain fully engaged in identifying criminal networks, dismantling their structures and bringing their members to justice,” Giwa said.
He added: “We will continue to make Enugu State increasingly unconducive to unrepentant local criminals, criminal elements seeking to infiltrate the State, and their activities.”
The police boss also acknowledged the role of the Enugu State Government in strengthening security operations, particularly through support for training and other security initiatives.
He expressed appreciation to Governor Peter Mbah for what he described as his “unwavering support and commitment” to making the state safe and conducive for residents, visitors and legitimate economic activities.
According to Giwa, the governor’s “forward-looking leadership and support for training and security operations have significantly strengthened our collective efforts to combat crime in the State.”
He similarly commended the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for his strategic leadership and operational support, as well as other security agencies for their collaboration.
The Commissioner urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, movements and activities to the police through established channels.
He stressed that community cooperation remained indispensable to intelligence-led policing, particularly in the identification and dismantling of criminal networks.
The latest arrests and recovery of weapons come amid intensified security operations across Enugu State, with the Police Command maintaining that its objective is to dismantle kidnapping syndicates, recover criminal assets and ensure that perpetrators of violent crimes are brought to justice.
