Nigerian Army has appointed Major General Auwalu Mahmuda as the new General Officer Commanding (GOC) the 2 Division, headquarters , Adekunle Fajuyi Cantonment, Ibadan, Oyo State.
General Mahmuda assumed office on Monday as the 56th GOC of the division, taking over from Major General Chinedu Nnebeife, who has been redeployed to command the newly established 10 Division in Jalingo, Taraba State.
Speaking during the handing and taking-over ceremony at the division headquarters, Mahmuda expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, for the confidence reposed in him.
He described the appointment as a rare privilege and pledged to consolidate on the operational achievements recorded by his predecessor.
“I thank the Chief of Army Staff for finding me worthy of this appointment,” Mahmuda said, assuring officers and soldiers under the division of his commitment to enhancing operational effectiveness.
He also commended Nnebeife for the milestones achieved during his tenure and promised to sustain the existing successes.
In his valedictory speechthe outgoing GOC thanked the Chief of Army Staff for the opportunity to lead the 2 Division and for his subsequent appointment to command the newly created 10 Division.
Nnebeife’s tenure was marked by one of the military’s most significant internal security operations this year—the successful rescue of the abducted Oriire schoolchildren and their teachers.
The intelligence-led operation, conducted in collaboration with other security agencies, secured the victims’ release after 56 days in captivity without the payment of ransom, according to the military.
