Federal Capital Territory Police Command has uncovered a syndicate involved in the illegal production and use of fake diplomatic and official government number plates, recovering more than 80 fake Presidency and diplomatic plates allegedly used by criminals to evade security checks and gain access to restricted areas.
Commissioner of Police Ahmed Sanusi disclosed this on Friday during a press briefing at the command headquarters in Abuja, saying investigations also led to the recovery of vandalised public infrastructure, including drainage covers, solar-powered street lights, armoured electricity cables and internet communication cables stolen from different parts of the Federal Capital Territory.
He said intelligence-led operations and anti-crime patrols across Maitama, Garki, Durumi, Jabi, Apo Legislative Quarters, Lugbe and Nyanya led to the arrest of five suspected vandals identified as Godwin Aja, Mustapha Nasiru, Ibrahim Garba, Abdulrasheed Sale and Dabarani Mujitafa.
He described the destruction and theft of public infrastructure as economic sabotage, warning that the activities had contributed to road accidents, insecurity in darkened areas and disruption of electricity supply.
The police commissioner warned scrap dealers and buyers of stolen public assets that investigations had been expanded to dismantle the entire criminal network involved in the theft and disposal of government infrastructure.
According to him, all recovered facilities will be handed over to the Federal Capital Territory Administration for reinstallation.
On the fake number plate syndicate, Sanusi said investigations began after he noticed the widespread use of diplomatic and official government registration numbers by unauthorised persons.
He added that detectives uncovered both the users and suppliers of the fake plates, and suspects already arrested would be charged to court after investigations.
Although the manufacturers operate outside the FCT, Sanusi said investigators had identified them and were closing in on the network.
He revealed that investigations showed buyers paid between N500,000 and N1.7 million for the fake diplomatic and government number plates.
According to him, the fake plates were being used to beat security checkpoints and gain unrestricted access to ministries, parastatals and other restricted facilities.
“We have commenced extensive investigations and will not relent until every link in the supply, distribution and disposal chain of these stolen public assets is identified and brought to justice.
“Some of these things are ranging between N500,000 and N1.7 million for them to procure.”
“They use these fake numbers to beat security checkpoints. They use them to go into ministries and parastatals unstopped because everybody feels once you are a diplomat or have these plates, you are a big man, ” he said.
Sanusi urged residents to report suspicious vehicles bearing diplomatic registration numbers, stressing that genuine diplomatic plates have identifiable security features and recognised formats.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-driven policing and called for greater public collaboration in tackling crime across the Federal Capital Territory.
