Enugu State Government through the state’s ministry of education , Tuesday, July 28,2026 carried out the verification of the proposed site for a second Smart Green School in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area aimed at providing equal access to quality education for the children from the community.

The Commissioner for Education,Prof Ndubueze Mbah who led the Verification team to Community Primary school,Umuokoro, ward 3, Inyi , described the approval for an additional Smart Green school in Igboeze- North Local Government Area as another milestone in Governor Peter Mbah’s drive to expand access to quality, technology-driven education in the state. He reaffirmed that education in the state’s Smart Green Schools remains completely free.
Addressing the people of the community at the site , the Commissioner said the visit followed Governor Peter Mbah’s approval of the additional Smart Green School after an impressive presentation by the community and an invitation from the Chairman of Igbo-Eze North Local Government, Hon. Michael Ogalla.
He explained that the site verification was a critical stage before the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, in collaboration with the Surveyor-General’s Office, would conduct a survey and determine the proper orientation for the project.
According to him, the state government assesses every proposed site for Smart Green school based on key criteria: centrality, accessibility, non-encumbrance, security and ownership.
“From what we witnessed today, the community has assured us that every child will be able to walk to this school, that the land is not encumbered because it is the site of an existing ENSUBEB community school, and that they will protect and take ownership of this investment from beginning to end,” he said.
Prof. Mbah said the community also pledged to safeguard workers, teachers and the facility, while expressing profound appreciation to Governor Peter Mbah for approving the project.
He described the development as “a major milestone” in what he called the third phase of the expansion of Enugu’s Smart Green School initiative.

The commissioner also dismissed rumours that parents would pay fees in the schools, saying that the Smart Green School programme provides completely free education.
“The Smart Green School is 100 per cent free. We do not charge school fees, school material fees, PTA fees. Government provides school uniforms, learning materials, free school feeding and healthcare. This is the true definition of free basic education,” he said.
He added that Governor Mbah had approved the citing of a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college in Igboeze North Local Government Area, describing both projects as transformative investments that would provide modern learning facilities, solar power, potable water, Artificial intelligence, Mechatronic, Robotics, Experiential learning, and brighter opportunities for children across the local government area
Charging the community to take ownership of the school project, the Prof Mbah said that the only obligation expected from host communities was to take ownership of the project and protect it as an investment in the future of their children.
Speaking, the Chairman of Igbo-Eze North Local Government, Hon. Michael Ogalla, expressed gratitude to Governor Peter Mbah for approving one of the eight additional Smart Green Schools for the council area, noting that the new school would ease the burden on children who previously travelled long distances to the existing ward Smart Green School.

“His Excellency considered that our people live far from the existing Smart Green School and graciously approved another one for us. We are sincerely grateful and assure him of our full support,” Ogalla said.
The council chairman disclosed that the local government had already made arrangements to ensure easy access to the project site, promising to improve the road network where necessary.
“We already have an access road that can accommodate heavy-duty vehicles. If another access becomes necessary, we will provide it,” he said.

Ogalla further revealed that construction materials were already available and expressed confidence that work on the Smart Green School and other related projects, including the proposed Forest Guard headquarters, would commence simultaneously.
